When you first start training you will join in with the class, learning the basics of Kyokushinkai Karate. You won’t be expected to know anything because a lot of karate is taught by being shown and watching what others do. You don’t have to be fit to start as the training will develop your fitness, stamina, co-ordination and strength. You will learn vital skills from Kihon, Kata and Kumite
Kihon
Kihon covers all the techniques that you need to learn on your Kyokushinkai journey. On the road to your black belt it is broken down into 10 syllabus levels. You start off on the 10th Kyu syllabus and work your way up through each syllabus mastering the Kihon in each as you go.
Kata
In its basic “form” kata is a series of moves that combine all the skills you learn, such as blocks, punches, kicks and most importantly stances. There are a lot of katas to learn. They become more and more complexthe higher up the grades that you travel.
Kumite
In other words – Fighting. Unlike other styles, Kyokushinkai is real karate, as in it’s a knockdown style. But don’t worry, as you begin no one is going to take advantage. You’ll have plenty of time to develop. There are plenty of national and international knockdown competitions that you’ll be chomping at the bit to enter.
You start off with a white belt. That’s where your journey begins. There are 10 grades, called “kyu” that you work to achieve. There are 5 different colour belts where 2 grades are in each colour.
These colours are: Orange, Blue, Yellow, Green, Brown.
